Quite often when our prized iPod, laptop or desktop computer breaks down, we simply leave it at the repair shop and have the technicians manage its refurbishing. We do not care to know what happened to it and why, and our sole question is often, “How long will it last this time?”, then damn the technician when it conks out soon after. If we know the parts and eccentricities of our machines we can understand what the technician cautioned us about and our computer would have lasted longer. This article tries to set out the rationale for knowing our laptops.
